The Cat Sitter's Cradle by John Clement

Dixie and Joyce Metzger are walking dogs when they apparent exotic dead bird and young illegal girl who just given birth. They take the girl under their “wing” and Joyce takes the girl, baby and bird home. The bird is not dead. Meanwhile Dixie is hired by a wealthy couple, Harwick to care for their cat and fish. On her first visit Dixie finds Mr Harwick at the bottom on the pool. The pool boy, Kenny is a suspect and a friend of Dixie. She begins to look into what is occurring. Ethan and Dixie romance proceeds. These subplots are nicely brought together after a number of twists.
